USED TEXTBOOKS

How do I sell my used textbooks on LocaZu?

  1. Register for a free account (takes less than 30 seconds).
  2. Post the used textbooks you want to sell by title, author, publisher, year, ISBN, price, and the school where you are.
  3. Other students will see your listing and contact you by email (through our site--no one sees your email address).
  4. Arrange to meet the buyer on your campus.
  5. Mark the used textbook as sold!

Tip: The more accurate information you enter, the better. Publisher, year, and ISBN aren't required, but they help others find your used textbook. Watch your spelling of a book title.

How do I buy used textbooks here?

You meet directly with the student selling them on campus.

  1. Search for the book you want by title, author(s), publisher, year, or ISBN, on your campus.
  2. Message the seller through our site to buy the book.
  3. Arrange to meet the seller on campus and buy the book.
OR
  1. Create an account and set up alerts for the textbooks you want.
  2. When a book you created the alert for is posted, you get notified by email from us.
  3. Message the seller through our site to buy the book.
  4. Arrange to meet the seller on campus and buy the book.

We recommend option two, to save you time.

Why should I set up alerts?

It's free, it saves you time, and helps you get what you want: as soon as a used textbook with your terms, such as location and price, gets listed, you get alerted. And chances are, if you contact the seller right away, he or she is still on a computer and available to respond to you, and the book is more likely to still be available.

How much does it cost to list a used textbook?

Nothing! It's free.

And that certainly beats book sales commissions - for example on textbookexchange.ca12.5% commission on a $20 used textbook works out to be $2.5.

How long does my listing stay up?

Until you sell your used textbook. We'll send you a reminder near the end of each semester to remove your used textbooks if you've already sold them, or to update details, such as price, to make sure that the postings remain current.

Anything I should watch out for?

Yes. People who:

  • don't want to meet face to face to trade used textbooks,
  • send inquiries from faraway, especially outside the country,
  • want you to transfer money,
  • ship your books,
  • involve money order, cashier's check, (these are often fake and you will be held liable once your bank discovers the fraud long after you deposit the phony cheque) or escrow services.

Avoid scammers. Meet locally on campus at a safe and busy area. DO NOT give out personal or financial information. DO NOT ship your books.

TEXTBOOKS MARKETPLACE & BUYBACK

How does the Marketplace work?

Enter the book you're looking to buy, and we check 200 million books and thousands of bookstores in seconds & show you the absolute best deals. We even calculate the shipping rates that you'd normally have to spend hours looking for in the fine print or at the last second before checkout.

Saves you a pile of cash and time.

Then you can choose to buy from the marketplace or from students on your campus. We recommend the latter: usually cheaper, no shipping, and benefits the student. But if you find nothing descent on campus, then online shopping is the way to go.

NOTE: LocaZu doesn't sell books or buy your books back. We just find you the best deals. When you click on the book that you want, that's why you get routed to the seller's site.

How does buyback work?

If you don't want to put a private ad to sell your books, we shop around for the best "buyback" deals online from multiple vendors. You get the best deals and free shipping if you have a US address to ship from.

What's with shipping?

If you're buying online, and especially if you live in Canada, this is where you really get jipped. Some sellers don't even ship to Canada. And shipping rates are not easy to figure out on most of the sites. So we've factored in the standard shipping rates and promotions to save you time. But if you have a US address, it's often a lot cheaper or even free - select "US shipping" to compare.

It's best to check with the site that sells the book for the latest shipping rates - we can't always be up-to-date on this.

How do I buy my books through textbook marketplace?
  1. Find your book
  2. You get routed to sellers site (i.e. Amazon or Abe Books)
  3. Pay for your books
  4. Seller ships the books

Tip: Don't leave this til last minute. If you have a US address, pick up there - cheaper.

How do I sell my books through textbook buyback?
  1. Enter the ISBN & search for the best deal - let LocaZu do the legwork for you and find the absolute best deals and save you time.
  2. Select the best offer. Then select how you want to get paid: Cheque or PayPAL
  3. Print your shipping label and package your books.
  4. Get paid! The vendor pays you once they get your books.

NOTE: LocaZu doesn't buy your books back. We just find you the best deals and most reputable vendors.

How do I determine the condition of my textbooks?

Look at the vendor's guidelines and mark your book accordingly so that you get an accurate offer. If your dog ate half your book, and mark it as brand spanking new condition and get a super offer, it wont fly. And be sure to enter the correct edition too.

How soon do I get paid?

The vendors usually pay you within one week from the day they get your book. They need time for processing. You can check their policies for details.

How does shipping work?

If you're selling or buying books worth more than a few bucks (varies by the vendor), they pick up the shipping tab. So it's worth selling/buying a bundle of your books together to get a break on shipping. But if you have to pay for shipping, then carefully factor in this cost. Here's a tool to figure out Canada Post rates (one of many shipping providers - this link is to just help get a feel for shipping rates):

What's a better deal - selling directly to students on my campus or to vendors on buyback?

Usually, it's a better deal to sell to a student on your campus: direct, no shipping, can get pretty good deals from other students.

Buyback is for you if:
  • you can't sell your books to other students on or near your campus for a good deal,
  • the course isn't offered and no one wants your book,
  • need a quick sell.

Why go to LocaZu rather than my school's bookstore buyback?

Your bookstore generally has a deal with only one vendor. The offers and buyback quota are therefore limited. Whereas LocaZu shops around online and finds you the absolute best deals, and generally higher than the bookstore's. AND on LocaZu, you're not limited to the antisocial bookstore buyback hours. You can sell anytime, anywhere.

Why wouldn't anyone buy my book back?

Probably not enough demand. But make sure you entered your book information accurately.

Items generally not bought back by vendors: ebooks, custom courseware, used software.

How come you quote prices in US$?

Most marketplace sellers' books are quoted in US dollars. When you buy, the conversion rates will depend on your credit card conversion rates, rather than us converting the rates.
